Barry

CBS Sunday Morning Commentary by Ben Stein

I love CBS Sunday Morning. I try my best to watch it before Home Church. It’s not always fruits and daises and I don’t always agree but it’s not really a news cast. It’s stories and commentary about the arts, people, places etc….

One of its contributors is Ben Stein. I’m sure you all know this guy!

Take a look at his commentary here. For more go to: http://www.benstein.com/

    1995:

Herewith at this happy time of year, a few confessions from my beating heart:

I have no freaking clue who Nick and Jessica are. I see them on the cover of People and Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits and kitty litter. I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who Nick and Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know who they are and why they have broken up? Why are they so important? I don’t know who Lindsay Lohan is, either, and I do not care at all about Tom Cruise’s wife.

Am I going to be called before a Senate committee and asked if I am a subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick and Jessica are. Is this what it means to be no longer young. It’s not so bad.

Next confession: I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don’t feel threatened. I don’t feel discriminated against. That’s what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn’t bother me a bit when people say, “Merry Christmas” to me. I don’t think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn’t bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a creche, it’s just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don’t like getting pushed around for being a Jew and I don’t think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can’t find it in the Constitution and I don’t like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren’t allowed to worship God as we understand Him?

I guess that’s a sign that I’m getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the America we knew went to.

I’ve gotten some forwards on this over the years that put a decidedly Christian spin on it. Adding quotes from Anne Graham, CS Lewis and others..but I think it can stand on it’s on.

I agree with his observation and that’s one of the reasons I do what I do!

    An educational moment with Greg

Jackson loves books. He can’t quiet say the “k” on the end of book so he says “booo” “booo.” His favorite book right now is, Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother Too? by Eric Carle.

I’ve read this thing like a billion times wishing they would alternate between mother and father…but I will not rise to the top of that soap box, so on to the point.

The names of animal babies, parents, and groups in this book:

Kangaroo–A baby kangaroo is a joey. Its mother is a flyer and its father is a boomer. A group of kangaroos is a troop or a mob or a heard.

Lion–A baby lion is a cub. Its mother is a lioness and its father is a boomer. A group of lions is a pride.

Giraffe–A baby giraffe is a calf. Its mother is a cow and its father is a bull. A group of giraffes is a tower or a heard.

Penguin–A baby penguin is a chick. Its mother is a dam and its father is a sire. A group of penguins is a colony or a parade.

Swan–A baby swan is a cygnet. Its mother is a pen and its father is a cob. A group of swans is a wedge or a heard.

Fox–A baby fox is a cub or a pup. Its mother is a vixen and its father is a dog fox. A group of foxes is a pack or a skulk.

Dolphin–A baby dolphin is a calf. Its mother is a cow and its father is a bull. A group of dolphins is a school or a pod.

Sheep–A baby sheep is a lamb. Its mother is a ewe and its father is a ram. A group of sheep is a flock.

Bear–A baby bear is a cub. Its mother is a sow and its father is a boar. A group of bears is a pack or a sloth.

Elephant–A baby elephant is a calf. Its mother is a cow and its father is a bull. A group of elephants is a heard.

Monkey–A baby monkey is an infant. Its mother is a mother and its father is a father. A group of monkeys is a group or a troop or a tribe.

Deer–A baby deer is a fawn. Its mother is a doe and its father is a buck. A group of dear is a heard.

    Boot Camp 07

Boot Camp was so amazing this year. It has been awesome each year we’ve had one but this year was especially special. We had big breakthrough with guys in the area of addictions, marriages, deeper intimacy with God, just understanding and knowledge, hearing from God and many other things. Below I’ve listed some of the quotes.

    Here are a few quotes:

“Your ministry reaches to the deepest part of the masculine heart. It has been an experience I will not soon forget….”

“After this weekend I am fully aware of the warfare that has been going on against me and I know what to do about it….”

“I came this weekend filled with much pain, hatred and resentment…before I felt I had to be perfect to come to God…God used this camp and the caring people to change my life.”

This is a picture that is not edited at all. This guy accepted Christ as his savior and Lord. He was a Soldier in Iraq recently and now is out of the Marines and lives in Columbia SC.

Boot Camps are not evangelistic in their nature generally, although the Gospel is spoken very clearly. However, God had other plans as He was speaking a message of freedom and life to the men there.

Below is another picture of a Baptism. This guys lives in Rutherfordton near Shelby. He committed his life to Christ after being a vocal Agnostic against Christianity.

It is another one of those situations where Christ spoke directly to the disillusionment and hurt that was going on in this young man’s heart. The team didn’t know that he wanted to be baptized and as Barry finished with the man in the picture above he asked if anyone else wanted to make a profession of faith and he came on in the water. It was awesome and cold to. This was a spring feed pond in the mountains on a windy day.

    Few more quotes:

“…I am a warrior for Christ Jesus. Thank each of you for your love for me. I’m with you!”

“…I came fearful that I would not hear God speak directly. I did hear him. After Dan’s baptism I heard God say, ‘this is your proof that you are made in my image and are meant to be used for good rather than evil.’”

“This weekend will never be forgotten… I thank all and above all God for giving me this opportunity. Let the healing and the journey begin.”

“Thank you for allowing me to be a part of what you are doing. HE is worthy!”

“I heard from God and felt his presence more than ever before in my life…my mission ahead is much more focused.”

We had a great team again this year. Below listed from top left is: Barry, Tom, Mark, Me, Stephen, Chris (prayer team), Jamie, Walter (prayer team) & Dick. Also on the team but not in the picture was: Brian, Alfred and Aubrey all on the prayer team.

    And some more quotes:

    “…In a nutshell - I AM A NEW MAN FOR GOD!”

“…the teachings are incredible and needed… to go through these sessions has opened Freedom & Life to my new heart. Praise be to God!”

“…It was a great weekend and an impactful one.”

“…this weekend has given me a better understanding of myself and also more resources to help me continue to fight the fight.”

For you men reading this that have never been to a Boot Camp, please come or go to one of John Eldredge’s Camps out in Colorado. It is life changing time! And for you women, go to one of our Divinely Designed Conferences or out to Colorado to a Captivating. Life is too short not to take the time and go to one of these and experience God in this way.

We do not have the corner market on this experiencing God stuff, nor does Eldredge and Ransomed Heart. We are just regular people that are telling you our stories of redemption and freedom that God has brought us through. To Him is all the Glory!

Hope to see you on the trail! I’ll leave you with some more pictures from Boot Camp:
