What About Us?

Matthew 25:34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,

36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’  40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Many Christians tend to cover the first five in this list of six tasks to be assumed by HIS followers.  Yet for some reason we tend to ignore the last group- those in jails and prisons.

This has been a bit surprising to me because of the importance of this scripture.  This portion of the gospel of Matthew is dealing with end time judgment when God will be separating the sheep from the goats(believers from the unbelievers).  Pretty important I’d say.

Jesus did not say “look after these people unless they make bad decisions and do bad things”.  He simply said, “look after them”.  He even called them “brothers and sisters of mine”.

From a more practical side, these men and women will be released into our neighborhoods.  They will behave as we all do, according to their beliefs.

Among the numerous letters I received over the last year I want to share a couple of quotes:

. It(weekend boot camp) made us look at ourselves as somebody and not the failures society looked at us as.

…thank you for caring for us “throw aways”.

How tragic is this?  We must help them change their behavior by pointing them toward God who will help them change their beliefs.  And most importantly we want them released into THE KINGDOM for eternity.  We will continue generating opportunities for God to change hearts.

Not many of us can actively be involved in all the instructions of Matthew 25.  But we can do what we can and support through prayer and giving the rest.

If you want to become actively involved in prison ministry I can help make that happen.  If you want to seek God’s presence at an outdoor adventure

Regardless let’s make 2012 a special year for HIS KINGDOM.  Let’s commit to being used by God to help others know Him and receive His healing power in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.

If you want to give I can put those funds to good use as well.

New Wilderness Adventures has been will continue to challenge men for ten years with the question “What does a Godly man look like?”

Our mission “to reach men for Christ and lives of adventure as his followers” is more than a slogan it is a passionate calling and that calling inspires every adventure, every retreat and every conversation.

NWA reorients men to the irrevocable truth that God created them in His image. NWA then simply acts as guides armed with Biblical truth and the Holy Spirit to help men live as Godly men in every aspect of their lives.

Update on Prison Ministry

Over the past several years, I have diligently been working to take the “Wild At Heart” and “Captivating” message (authored by John & Stasi Eldredge) to more than 800 men and women that are residents of Texas Department of Criminal Justice in five different units.
Our opportunities continue to grow, and we are blessed that Ransomed Heart (John Eldredge) has aided us in our efforts.  I have also begun to represent RH when they get correspondence from jails and prisons around the world.
“We not only have the Biblical mandate to go to these brothers and sisters, but they will eventually be released to our neighborhoods.  If we expect them to become honest productive members of society, they need to know what that looks like.  You cannot be what you do not know.  Very few of these men and women have had positive male role models in their lives.”
I am currently networking to assemble teams to take this message to even more facilities across north Texas and across the nation.  I covet your prayers as we move forward with this initiative as well as the continued work in the Faith Based Programs at the Johnston Unit in Winnsboro, TX and Beto Unit in Tennessee Colony, TX.

Quotes from residents and former residents of TDCJ:

  • I had tried the secular approach to my addiction out in the world and it suppressed my addiction for a while, but it never got to the root of the problem.  Jesus did.  I thank all the volunteers for bringing the problem that injured child inside of me to my attention; so I could them take him to Jesus.  God bless you all.
  • …my biggest breakthrough came with the Captivating study.  I have been home for three and a half months and am still amazed.
  • Thank you for caring about the “throwaways”.
  • Those who Jesus sets free are free indeed.  No more pain, no more pain, Jesus has taken away my pain.
  • I have a renewed sense of belonging and understanding of my role as a father and husband and what makes us tick as a man.
  • I now know I don’t have to live my life in turmoil…and that God is on my side.
  • I was an atheist up until this weekend.  The word of God was the major impact of the weekend.
  • You guys are a lot of things but fake is not one of them.  I have been running for 17 years from a mission that God has chosen me for.  My heart has been re-started and softened.  Thank you for everything.
  • This is needed throughout the correctional community.  It is an open door to the development of a man’s heart.

The Larger Story Grows Larger

A huge part of the experience of FREEDOM and LIFE in which we have become immersed is that of the “Larger Story”.  That is; there is more going on than that which we personally see and feel in our every day lives.  I have heard this described as God’s view being from 30,000 feet while our view is from where we are standing at the time.
Now don’t go theologian on me.  God can see more than just the earth from a jet liner.  But you get the point.  God sees things differently than we do (Isa. 55:9).  Understanding this helps us avoid the “poor me” trap the enemy loves to usher us into during difficult times.

I have understood this for a while.  I even use the larger story at funerals when I am asked to speak.  This does help in times of loss and difficulty.  But recently God brought this home to me in a new and larger way.
My cousin Alvie Paul Strickland passed away recently.  This was a particularly significant loss for me in a couple of ways.  Alvie at 71 was the eldest in the Strickland line of men.  The distinction of the eldest now falls on me.  Before we had families he and I were the last of our branch of the Strickland name.  Alvie had a son who has two sons.  Gail and I have three sons, so we’re replenished for a while.

Also in going through Alvie’s stuff a very old telegram was found.  The telegram was from the Marine Corps informing my grandmother of Alvie’s dad(my uncle)  Alvie Bruce Strickland’s death at the battle for Okinawa on May 14, 1945.
I knew that my Uncle Alvie had paid the ultimate price during WW II but it never hit home like this.  Physically holding this 66 year old piece of paper brought the enormity of my story, our story in a way more powerful than ever.  This helped make the minor issues (that I sometime tend to make major) even smaller.

The next time you are rocked with death, job issues, divorce, financial issues, physical illness, depression or family conflict remember there is more going on than you realize.  God is in control.  He uses His people to accomplish His will.  Sometimes the experience is painful.

Following Jesus is not always easy, but it is always worth it.

You are vital to the mission,
Barry Strickland

Freedom and Life – Prison Style

Mighty Warriors,

It was another beautiful weekend at the Johnston Unit with the Heroes Weekend going through the Wild At Heart message.  John Fennell and Casey Miner are mighty warriors that I was proud to be shoulder to shoulder with for this time.

Those of you who supported this mission through prayer and/or your financial giving please receive a giant WELL DONE from God.  (He told me to tell you.)  This was a blessed time.  I genuinely wished you could have been with me.

Here is the feed back.  I took no more than one quote from any one evaluation sheet.

————————–

  • We were enlightened and with a new awareness concerning life.
  • I thought everything was awesome although my butt is sore! Ha!  God spoke to me and delivered me from all the lies and faces I have put on for years.  Thanks.
  • It was great and has impacted my life
  • This has been the highlight of my time here. (at Johnston)
  • I wished it had been longer…I know you had more stuff to tell us.
  • A lot of men came together this weekend.  We learned from each other to get back to the way we need to be.
  • I had seen most of the movies the clips were taken from.  But put into the light of the bible, manhood and love I see them from a totally different aspect.
  • …we learned about recovery.  We can start a new life without drugs.
  • It made us look at ourselves as somebody and not the failures society looked at us as.
  • …I have never been to anything like this at all.  It showed me that when you think people don’t care, they do…the Wild At Heart weekend was amazing.
  • This has been a very motivating and good event that put me on the right track in my life.
  • It opened by eyes to why I do things and why my thoughts are the way they are.  The Heart of the Woman part hit home because it taught and confirmed how to treat women.
  • I know that with God I can prevail over evil.  I was meant to come to Wild at Heart.
  • …it gave me a lot of healing in my heart.  I am going to keep digging.
  • Wow it was pretty amazing…  I feel different.
  • I learned a lot about the woman’s heart.  I am having issues with my wife.  This was something I needed to hear.
  • The biggest questions I’ve had for a long time got answered, especially about relationships.
  • I will make improvements in my life and my walk with the Lord.
  • I was able to understand better my place in the larger story.
  • I loved every minute of it.  I hope it will make me a better man and Father.  Love you guys.
  • It opened my heart and mind to a whole new perspective.
  • I have learned a lot about myself.
  • This allowed me to take inventory of my abuse and sitting down to talk to God and give it all over to Him.
  • I got closer to God this weekend.
  • I am motivated to live the way I was born to live.
  • It was great don’t change a thing.
  • I learned to put away my past and become a new man.
  • This was exactly what I needed to hear in my life right now.
  • This was one of the most rewarding spiritual experiences I’ve ever had.
  • I have a renewed sense of belonging and understanding of my role as a father and  husband and what makes us tick as a man.
  • I now feel called to serve God in some sort of way.  I want to live life and not let life live me.
  • …God revealed Himself to me.  I hurt no more.  A heavy burden was lifted off of me.  The Lord gave me peace.
  • I wish everyone could experience this.
  • I have come to realize that I must put God first.
  • This was the best experience of my life.
  • This has touched me deep down.  I know now I am saved by God.
  • I know now that I am being healed and then i will be able to rescue my family.
  • The presentation of the gospel in four acts was powerful to me.
  • The whole weekend was jam packed with God.
  • This was the most eye, heart and mind opening experience of my life.
  • I will come out of here with a new outlook on life and myself.
  • I feel that God sent ya’ll here.
  • I will stop being a poser.  My eyes are open to Lord more.
  • I enjoyed every part of this weekend.
  • Learning how the wound – lie – vows process applies to my drug addiction.  All need to do this.  It should be mandatory.
  • I am digging deep down for the things that need healing.
  • I now know I don’t have to live my life in turmoil…and that God is on my side.
  • Excellent every man should go through this.

Wild at Heart Boot Camp – Johnston Unit July 22-24

This past weekend, I led a Wild at Heart Boot Camp in Winnsboro TX – The Johnston Unit Texas Prison.  There was a terrific presence of the Holy Spirit.

Please share in praising God with us.  Chris Roe, Casey Miner and John Fennell where on my team and these you guys are mighty warriors.

Each of the following quotes were taken from individual evaluations no more than one from each and no repeats.

  • I was an atheist up until this weekend.  The word of God was the major impact of the weekend.
  • You guys are a lot of things but fake is not one of them.  I have been running for 17 years from a mission that God has chosen me for.  My heart has been re-started and softened.  Thank you for everything.
  • It has been a life changing opportunity.
  • The most impact was the knowledge about prayer.  I never knew how to communicate with God.
  • I feel a lot stronger in my relationship with the Lord and I’ve been given the tools to be successful in life.
  • …this really reached my heart & soul and brought ou the loving kind part of me that I have been trying to bring out for a long time.  My hard heart has been squeezed until it became soft again!!!
  • …this opened my eyes.
  • This has helped me understand the differences between men and women and where my adventurist personality came from.
  • I can change the type of father that I have been and become the actual Dad I was supposed to be.  Also I know better how to treat a woman.
  • It was the best, most inspiring  two and half days I have ever spent.
  • The weekend has inspired me to fight for my children’s hearts..
  • I have learned how to be the man that I will love to be.  I still can be that dad the my little girl will love and take joy in.
  • It was awesome.  It was a time set aside for me by the Lord to reveal Himself to me.  I am so thankful I got to experience His love for me through you guys.
  • Wild at Heart has brought my life back together.
  • This is needed throughout the correctional community.  It is an open door to the development of a man’s heart.
  • I was confused on how you hear from Him and now I know.  Thank you so much.
  • It is good to know that God is not done with me yet and my life is not totally messed up.  God is not done with me yet.
  • I’m one who will not have family support when I get out of here.  I felt God’s presence telling me that He won’t ever leave me, that He will be there for me in here and out there in the world.
  • I’ve learned how to speak with the Lord and know when He is talking back to me too.
  • I feel like a ton of bricks has been lifted from my heart.
  • Breaking the bonds helped a lot had the most impact but the whole weekend was good.
  • I got closer to areas in my life that were the real underlying problems that I really need to address from a personal standpoint.  I finally got a hold of a lot of things that I carried around and covered up by drinking.
  • The best thing was learning about my heart and my wife’s heart.

Kairos Prison Ministry Revisited

With the approach of Kairos #11 at Hutchins State Jail in Hutchins, TX I decided to post a journal entry I wrote a year ago for Kairos #9

Kairos Prison Ministry — Kairos #9 – Hutchins State Jail — February 18 – 21, 2010

Matthew 25:43-45
43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44″They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’45″He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

This is the charge to which 54 men and women responded for Kairos #9 at Hutchins State Jail in Hutchins, Texas.
Hundreds of others joined in prayer, financial support and homemade cookie donations.

Holy Spirit encounters are difficult to report, but I will do my best.

Kairos prison weekends are one of the exceptional times of experiencing the power of God within an entire community of Christ Followers. I believe that God honors obedience to the direct ministry charge in the above scripture from the gospel of Matthew.

Kairos is inter/non-denominational yet purely evangelical Christianity. There were numerous denominational, nondenominational and house churches represented among the team of volunteers.

The three and a half day event is packed with terrific home cooked meals. These meals are cooked on the outside by the outside team, brought in and served by the servant stewards. The stewards are part of the inside Kairos Community by having been a part of a previous Kairos weekend as a participant. Fresh fruit and homemade cookies are available most of the time. These are things the “brothers in white” have not had as long as they have been locked up.

We were divided into seven families who each sat together for the weekend. Each family was at a table composed of six inmates (intentional racially diverse) and three “free world” men of which one is clergy. Over the days of the weekend we get to know each other quite well.

The event itself is highly active. There is time devoted to teaching from the platform both in the chapel area as well as the community area where we are at our tables. Teaching sessions range from 10 to 30 minute segments and are woven around the presenter’s personal story (testimony). There is live praise and worship. But best of all there is much time for interaction and re-enforcement of the messages both in small group and general activities presented through each talk.

By participating in the weekend the men gain permission to come to the chapel on the second and fourth Saturday mornings of the month for what is called “prayer and share”. There is a time of praise and worship then they are dismissed to their “families”. The guys are encouraged to stay together with their same families that they were introduced to at their Kairos weekend. We “free world” people are around some, but the goal is for them to become an autonomous small group.

There are two more pieces of the time that are worthy of mention. The men receive a hand written sealed letter from each of the team. 54 sealed letters is significant because all their mail, if they get any and many do not, is opened and screened before they get it.

Another thing that is so powerful is the prayer chain. All who agree in advance to pray for the week-end first names and cities are put on strips of paper and assembled into a literal “chain” of prayer. This is brought in early in the weekend and place surrounding the entire community room. The chain was well over 100 yards long and had names and cities from all over the world.

The general story of prison residents is one of loneliness and dismissal. They have not been loved nor have they witnessed love. Their lives have been about survival, very little else. The thought of so many people doing so much for them in the name of God is in many instances staggering.
There is also a surprise closing ceremony for the men as well. We move the men out of the chapel area to another part of the unit for the last couple of activities while the chapel is being reset to accommodate a much larger group. At this time another 100 or so free world people are ushered into the chapel for the closing ceremony. The men are unaware of what is going on. As we come back to The Chapel of Hope from the education-building spouses and friends singing “They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love” greet us. It is another time our brothers in white have the opportunity to feel God’s love through HIS people. They are very pleased yet puzzled why these people would do this for them. It is great!
At the end of the closing ceremony the microphone is open to any of the men who choose to speak anything on their hearts for two minutes. More than half of the 42 spoke in many instances very eloquently.

The following are quotes from our “brothers in white” at the closing ceremony:
“I thought those tissues on the table were to wipe crumbs until I started reading my Kairos mail.”
“I haven’t received any mail for over a year. The last letter was from my grandma Joyce who died over a year ago. The very first Kairos letter I opened was from a lady named Joyce. I cried.”
“Other than the birth of my daughter this is the most beautiful experience of my life.”
“I was expecting your regular weekend semina: sing, read scripture, listen to sermons…and I would leave pretty much like I came in, but wow! What I have tried to do on my own for 34 years God has accomplished in 3 1/2 days of Kairos.”
“Nothing can get me out of this new community of Kairos.”
“I have received Godly council that I desperately needed.”
“I came in a ‘Hellish’ state, I leave spiritually reclaimed.”

“I arrived very frail. I now know that I am not alone.”

“This has been a great experience I love every one of y’all.”

“I came in confused, haunted, lost, but I have let all that go. I have forgiven those who hurt me.”

“I found love, encouragement, fellowship, real Christians. I found myself.”

“I am taking strength, hope and encouragement from this time.”

“I have learned what a church is.”

“This has been a truly awesome experience.”

“Ya’ll did all this for us and you didn’t even know us. I know what agape love is.”

“I have been to Cowboy games, Longhorn games, but never anything as good as this…”

The following are quotes from the volunteers:

The Lord touched so many guys both those who were chosen and those who served.

To observe the response of these 42 men to the Truths of GOD’S Word is truly a Blessing.

There is no way of measuring the Harvest reaped from the Seeds sown during the 3 1/2 days of this KAIROS Event in the Chapel of Hope at Hutchins SJ.

If I could have every member of my (home) congregation observe this week-end from start to finish, there would be many more come to a greater understanding of God’s love than 42. In Him,

For me, Kairos was a spiritual “Jericho” as the walls came tumbling down. The power and the presence of the Holy Spirit was overwhelming to all involved – a joy and privilege to serve in this ministry.

I saw God mold and remold this team to the people He wanted to serve on H 9. I claimed the promise from Psalm 121:3 that” He would not allow our foot to slip”, and He did not.

This weekend was a life changing experience not only for the Brothers-in-White, but many of us in the outside world. That is why I continue to stay active in this prison ministry program to help build God’s Kingdom. I often see immediate results of God’s work.

It was the forgiveness ceremony that touched me most. Through the many tears of the brothers-in-white it was evident that God had done a work in the lives! Many burdens are lifted by the act of forgiveness of others.

It was truly a blessing to watch God at work. Chasing the “Wild Goose” is Fun! (Early Celtic Christians often referred to the Holy Spirit as “the Wild Goose” because of His unpredictability and wild nature.

One of the best usages of my vacation days! To witness the impact of God’s pure agape love in action is a true blessing. My own spiritual journey has once again received a “boost”.

The transformation of someone that has no clue what it is to be loved and desired, the change in attitude and openness and the acceptance of Jesus Christ is thrilling.Kingdom building is cool.

I attribute the success and power of God seen in this weekend for our Brothers-in-White to the depth and sincerity of the prayer put into this weekend the months and weeks before the weekend occurred.

There is much more. But this at least gives you an overview of what you invested in.
“May the peace that passes understanding guard your hearts and minds in Christ.” Phillipians 4:7

I’m in and AMEN.

Our Identity – As Followers of Jesus

As Christ followers we often battle with our identity.  There is an enemy who wants us to believe we are just “lowly sinners saved by grace”.  Unfortunately many believers echo this statement.  Too often we hear it from the pulpits of our churches.

I am not discounting the truth of such a statement because we were sinners.  We were saved by grace.  I am discounting this as our IDENTITY.  This is no longer who we are.

We are now new creations in Christ – 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Receiving these words creates a drastic shift in our attitude and in turn our effectiveness as Kingdom builders.   When we do slip(sin) the enemy comes at us. “There you go again, you probably are not even a Christian.  You might as well go with it.  You know you are just going to do it again.”  Let’s look at two scenarios of what our responses might be.

If your self identity is a sinner then there is a certain amount of truth in the statement. What would be the response?

If you see yourself as a new creation, more than a conqueror, an overcomer, a royal priest, chosen by God, you know there is absolutely no truth to the statement.  Would your response not be different?

This is a huge step to living victorious lives as Christ followers.

This is how we are described in scripture.

Too often believers believe the lies and accusations of the enemy. They either are ignorant of what God has said or they willingly disbelieve it based on their “feelings.” We must not be driven by our feelings! God’s truth is God’s truth. “Let God be true and every man a liar.” (Romans 3:4)

We need to learn who we are in Christ and confess the same out loud regularly. I am what God says I am regardless of how I feel about myself. My feelings cannot change the absolute truth of God’s word. We need to see ourselves in the light of God’s word.

Sum up what God says as true and leave the rest.

I found the above compilation of scriptures  a number of years ago on the internet.  I wish I could give credit to it’s earthly author.

Innocently Following HIM,

Hearing God’s Voice

We Live by Revelation

Taken from Experiencing God Day by Day devotional guide and journal.
by Henry Blackaby and Richard Blackaby page 7.

Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;
But happy is he who keeps the law.
Proverbs 29:18

The world operates on vision.  God’s people live by revelation.

The world seeks grand and noble purposes and goals to achieve.  People dream up the greatest and most satisfying things in which they can invest their lives.  Institutions establish goals and objectives and then organize themselves to achieve them.  God’s people function in a radically different way.  Christians arrange their lives based on the revelation of God, regardless of whether it makes sense to them.

God does not ask for our opinion about what is best for our future, our family our church or our country.  He already knows!  What God wants is to get the attention of His people and reveal to us what is on His heart and what is His will, for God’s ways are not our ways! (Isa. 55:8-9)

Whenever people do not base their lives on God’s revelation, they “cast off restraint.”  That is, they do what is right in their own eyes.  They set their goals, arrange their agendas, and then pray for God’s blessings.  Some Christians are living far outside the will of God, yet they have the audacity to pray and ask God to bless their efforts!

The only way for you to know God’s will is for Him to reveal it to you.  You will never discover it on your own.  When you hear from the Father, you have an immediate agenda for your life:  obedience.  As the writer of Proverbs observed: “Happy is he who keeps the law.”

Above The Cuckoo’s Nest

Above The Cuckoo’s Nest

I am reminded of how I so relate to Forrest Gump and his innocence that moved him from one adventure to another.  So much of what I have become and who we are is the result of innocently “walking with God”.

Straight from Dictionary.com synonyms for innocent:  chaste, clean, clear, pristine, pure, righteous, safe, upright, virtuous, immaculate, impeccable, honest, legal, legitimate, upright, honest.

At points in this process I look around and notice that things have changed and changed for the good.  Most of these things I did not set out to change.  They just did.  The biggest change of all is of course me.  I did not feel it day to day just as when we physically grew as a child.  I did not feel myself growing taller and stronger.  But at certain points we “noticed” it and were often surprised.

The key to humility is that I am not special.  This blessed life is available to all who choose to truly buy in.  I must interject that blessed is not synonymous with an Eden or Heaven type life where everything is perfect.  The blessed life is one of peace, hope and contentment because …”to live is Christ and to die is  gain.” –Php. 1:21.

The blessings in my life are numerous, actually infinite if you will.  Here are a few that come to mind quickly:  I don’t suffer emotional melt downs.  I can truly ask God what He is up to in times of testing.  I haven’t been in crisis in years.  I don’t try so hard.  I don’t try to lead, it just happens.  I don’t do ministry, I am ministry.  I am blessed with numerous opportunities to utilize this condition.  Stuff is stuff and it is going to burn up one of these days.  Money is also stuff.  I have a wonderful wife and kids.  I have an incredible network of friends/mentors  that God has sent my way.  I can truly be content in whatever my circumstances.  Phillipians 4:11-12 is no longer an abstract meaningless scripture.

I fly above the cuckoo’s nest because I chose to buy in once and for all (irreversibly) without doubt.  I have lived in the world of independence, doubt and self pity and it didn’t work out for me.  My ability to choose or to rebel always remains an option.  But I know rebellion is a poor choice.  At a point my will fell in sync with HIS and now in my spirit I will be at peace whatever the physical circumstances.  I still mess up.  I am not okay with it, but God is.

Walking Innocently With HIM,

Barry
